Fred Ward was born in the bush at a site close to Karilywara Creek, Patjarr community. Patjarr is situated on the edge of the Pila Nature Reserve and Mr Ward worked closely with the Native Title Unit of the Ngaanyatjarra Council for the area. Fred is a senior lawman and cultural leader for this region. He came back to live in the Ngaanyatjarra lands after spending several years at Papunya in the Northern Territory. During his time at Papunya Fred worked with Papunya Tula Artists and painted alongside his brother George Ward Tjungurrayi. Fred then moved back to Patjarr where he began working with Kayili artists - working in company with artists such as Coiley Campbell & Jackie Giles. He now resides at the Wanarn aged care facility and continues to paint with Warakurna Artists.
